Very soft, like a rubber/latex covered foam. Not an ideal set for everyone, but a great deal for the price!

These billiard balls don't really work. They have no grip at all and are super slippery. You *might* be able to get away with making a ball appear/disappear using the included shells, but forget trying to classic palm or do any kind of basic sleight/manipulation. Unfortunately, sleights are SO essential to billiard ball routines, and these billiard balls just don't deliver. You won't really be able to do much with them. Unless you want to continually buy tacky spray or some kind of product to artificially increase the grip of the balls, don't buy them. Plus, for the white balls, there is a difference in color between the shells and the actual balls. If the balls worked ok, then it wouldn't be too much if an issue. But because these balls are so poor in functional quality, the fact that the shells don't even match the balls is just adding insult to injury. Even though I do all of my magic with the cheapest stuff I can find and make do with what I have, these balls are still very dissappinting.
